How the mountain is laid out

Gulmarg is Kashmir's main ski resort. The village meadow sits at about 2,650 m, and the Gulmarg Gondola climbs from it in two phases: Phase 1 to Kongdoori, and Phase 2 on towards the shoulder of Mount Apharwat, close to 4,000 m.

Beginners

The gentle slopes around the village, served by short lifts, are where the ski school teaches first turns.

Intermediate skiers

Kongdoori, at the top of Phase 1, has wide, tree-lined runs back towards the village and a chairlift above the Kongdoori station.

Advanced and off-piste

Phase 2 opens the high bowls of Apharwat — long, ungroomed descents for strong skiers, best taken with a local guide and avalanche gear.

Before you ski

• Gondola tickets sell out on busy days — book ahead.
• Phase 2 closes in high wind or heavy snowfall.
• Conditions change quickly; check the live web cams before you go up.
